Here is the user manual from a CS1x mixermap pack I did back in 1998...
You can download the mixermap if you want to laugh at yesteryear technology... ;-)  If you really read this throught, good on you, you shall smile more than once (P133....).
I had done some very good TX816 mixermaps as well, but I can't find them anymore.

Yamaha CS1x Mixermaps Pack

User's guide
By Joel HENRY

Welcome to Yamaha's  Cs1x users. This cheap and user friendly synth is pretty easy to use with its front panel knobs. However, if you intend to sequence in Performance mode (which is the only way you can use the arpeggiator), you'll have no access to the 5/16 parts using the front panel. In edit mode, the matrice-like knob and switches are alright for instant edit but goes on your nerves after a while... So, for the one who wants to explore the huge sound capabilities of this machine and have it totally integrated into Cubase VST, here is my collection of Mixermaps.
My goal when designing them, was to emulate the synth with an intuitive user friendly interface. Most of the mixermaps that comes with cubase are absolutely non graphical. VsT is so good looking that the mixmaps looks prehistorical aside... So I tried to reach this kind of Virtual Studio Technology look but with the few tools available in the map page...

CS1x Modular map

Here, you have everything you need to do a decent patch. It looks a bit like a real CS1x but with a kind of big modular synth below. You edit your patch and set the amount of effect you want to send to the three DSP. It's amazing what you can get out of the CS1x just by playing in this page...

First set the synth in Performance mode by pressing perf (just like on the real synth). Sometimes by overusing the sysex, you may experience blocked notes, in this case just double press on this switch to reset (and you keep your edits). Always start with a delete range to clear the knobs. Then choose the patch to edit with the Program "LCD" number box.
Scene control work just like on your synth--> Your synth switches will light On/Off. If you don't have a foot pedal or if you want to have a visual control on the parameters, assign the vari control to foot pedal with scene ctrl switch and then use the right "wheel".
Layer control section is for layer volume and the button 4OSC /SOLO is really handy to start with one oscillator by muting the three other ones. If you work on a sound that has less than four layers press on it, increase the voice number in the 2/4 VCO section and you'll get a four layers sound with surprising results... To individually disable a layer, unpress On in the correspondant Vco LFo section.
Arpeggiator control is operated in the display section. The midi sync button on left when pressed sets the arpegiator to sync mode and turn the Arp tempo knob to 0 (sync is automatically cancelled by the turning of the tempo volume even if it stays ligthen). In Cubase synchronisation page, don't forget to enable midi clock on the CS1x midi port otherwise it won't sync...
Edit version naming : this cool features is handy once you're satisfied with your edits and want to store them on your synth. It adds an arrow and version number to your sound name last digit (->0 to 9). Simply increase the Edit -> N° number box aside the "LCD". 49 corresponds to 1, 57 to 9.
Important note : The six big pots (the same you have on your synth) and the two wheels are using midi continuous controller which make them (a bit) more midi bandwidth friendly than sysex... The volume knob is using sysex as it is the performance volume (top line of your CS1x). It has no effect on the volume of the 5/16 parts and the perf midi volume that you'll set in the MultiMix mixmap.I recommend you use a medium value because of the difference of level beetween Performance and Multi parts.

PerFormance EFX

Yes, all (or nearly all) the 3 DSPs fits in this page. The problem here was to find a way to show which effect is currently in use. I had, as well, to make a choice among all the effects (128 objects), so there is no Karaoke, no 3 bands EQ (because you can't access all the parameters in perf mode...), no cross delay and no tremolo effects. But there still a lot to do with and you have them all in one page...
To select an effect, press the corresponding switch in the top rack to toggle beetween the effect written below the button and the one written on the top of it. For Variation, exept the Reverb, you'll have to increase the number box on the right of the 2nd and 3rd racks. Doing so will activate the little square in the corner of the selected effect. So you know where you are. Of course you just have one of all the proposed variation effect available at a time.
In the Mod EFX rack, the LFO section in the middle is the common parameter of all the effect in this rack (that's why the AutoWah is here). In the 2band EQ I've added reset boost switch that adds 1Odb to bothlow and high frequency pots when pressed, and to no changes when depressed. It handy to quickly try different sound settings.
You can switch on/off the three effects processor at once just by pressing On in the Perf EFX rack. Depending on the settings of your patch, you may have no sound when the Vari effect is off, then simply press thru (bottom left).
Important note : When depressed both thru and ON switch bring the vari processor to DELAY L,C,R, and the Reverb and Chorus EfX to Hall1, Chorus 1.

CS1 MIX

Here you've got overall control on the 5/16 parts, perf MIDI volume, resonance, cutoff, Reverb and Chorus send... Even drum kits choice and Perf /Multi mode select. Four channels have MONO/POLY switch.
Important note : Except perf and mono select switch, all knobs uses continuous controllers.

MultiVerb&Chorus
Even more graphical, that reverb and chorus units are the one to use in multi mode. To select an effect, increase the number box in either main control, specials, chorus and flanger then specifie the variation (hall 2, room 1,2 or3...). Like in the Perf EFX map, you got the reset/+10db switch in the EQ section of the MOD FX rack and I added here a try button wich will shift the frequency range in proportionnal way (try it!).
As they were developped using Cubase 2.63 which gives better results for graphic display like level and balance...(see below), you may find the vu-meter strange, but they look good on the 2.63 version (that you can still use for remote control operation only...).

Have fun using theses maps and doing your music...

       Technical Considerations

All my mixermaps fits into an 800*600 screen without scrolling because I wanted to have a whole machine on a screen. In certain mixermaps, you may find hidden button and switches, they are necessary links, don't remove them !!!
Sysex and computers are not always good friends. First they are huge midi bandwith eaters... You need a fast computer (of course...) and a very good midi interface that supports sysex transmit. Some cheap sound cards, external serial port interface (Midiman Portman 1Cs) don't do the job and often causes the system to freeze, blocked notes... I've developped my mixermaps on a small notebook (Acer 133MMX) using Cubase 2.63 (because its a really stable and CPU friendly version). I've then tested them on a 200MMX with VST 3.55 and Ooh! they look totally different... It's a pity Steinberg changed the look of the switche ; it previously had a nice red top when pressed that I Used as a meter VU... Anyway, the maps works but I experienced a few crashes when using the maps on VST and recording the changes onto a mix track (I tried with my Yamaha TX816 as well and the same happened). My tips are ; dont enable sysex  thru and recording in the Midi filter page. Record a few changes, save your work and so on... Uses a low value on the quantize setting (options in mix map page).
Personnaly I use my maps more like the Akai MESA software, I mean like a full remote control with the sequencer not running.
